Glucosamine and Chondroitin may help maintain healthy joints

A recent report published in the British Medical Journal has questioned the use of Glucosamine and Chondroitin when recommended and funded by the health service.

Commenting on this latest news, Dr Carrie Ruxton from the Health Supplements Information Service (HSIS) says: “Glucosamine is found in high concentrations in the joints where the body uses it to form other substances necessary for cartilage repair and maintenance. With age, the enzyme in the body which is responsible for regeneration of cartilage becomes less effective, and the normal rate of regeneration slows down. In these situations, a glucosamine supplement can help maintain the normal structure and function of the cartilage and joints.”

“The authors conclude that glucosamine and chondroitin should not be available at the expense of health services. However, given the anecdotal evidence from people who gain benefit from taking these products for the maintenance of joint health, it is vital that they continue to supplement their diet with glucosamine and chondroitin. This point is also made by the study authors.”

Principle Healthcare produces and sells Glucosamine and Chondroitin as a food supplement. We believe there is evidence that Glucosamine and Chondroitin may help maintain healthy joints, and the volume of sales of food supplement products containing such ingredients suggest many consumers find them beneficial.
